It was apparently very buggy and had a tendency to crash and have all other sorts of issues, but for a time, this was the only way to play the full game in English, which naturally resulted in some ridiculous eBay prices of up to $150 or more! Perhaps predictably, the rom was eventually leaked and dumped onto the internet for others to play or make new repros of for their Etsy stores or what have you.
STAR OCEAN BLUE SPHERE ENGLISH GBC ROM PROFESSIONAL
Seems like a bad idea that you could definitely get in trouble for, but clearly that didn’t stop them! This wasn’t a professional translation but was instead a seemingly quick and no-frills machine translation (I assume so, anyway), something that feels obvious as soon as you boot it up. If you know Spanish or French, nothing of what I’m about to write in the next paragraph will be a concern for you, so that’s nice, at least!īased on what I was able to find, it seems that the initial English translation of this game was commissioned by an online store called FishyFace Games for them to sell at a premium. At least, that’s what I’ve thought all these years – turns out, there was an English translation done years ago that slipped past me all this time! It’s just a bit of an… odd case that comes with some caveats.
STAR OCEAN BLUE SPHERE ENGLISH GBC ROM PS4
Between that and the infrequency at which we receive Star Ocean games (it takes years between each entry, and we didn’t even get the PS4 version of Second Evolution in North America!), I figured I wouldn’t be seeing Blue Sphere in English anytime soon, if ever. According to an old post from RPGamer, the reason the game wasn’t localized was due to a combination of its size and Enix’s desire to shift over to the then-new Game Boy Advance. As soon as I learned about it years ago, I’ve been dying to play it ever since, but it was never localized into English and was never translated by any fans or whoever. The choice makes these games feel like extra credit in a way that doesn’t do it or its predecessor a disservice – if you want to pursue new adventures with these characters you’ve come to appreciate, you can seek them out and keep an open mind, but those who aren’t interested or don’t have the equipment needed to play aren’t going to be missing out on essential information.
STAR OCEAN BLUE SPHERE ENGLISH GBC ROM PLUS
The concept alone should make its appeal to me obvious: a direct sequel to Star Ocean 2, my favorite entry and a game I absolutely love, that reunites all of the characters, sends them on an adventure to a new planet, and somehow fits onto a Game Boy Color cartridge? Sign me up! It’s always a strange thing when a sequel to a big RPG goes to a smaller platform and tries wildly different things ( Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings and Blue Dragon Plus being two very curious examples that come to mind), but there’s something about it that I find endearing.

The title of this post is the most obvious giveaway in the world, but for me, that game is Star Ocean: Blue Sphere.
STAR OCEAN BLUE SPHERE ENGLISH GBC ROM SERIES
It’s easy to get wrapped up in the romantic idea that the grass is always greener on the other side, that the hard to get, obscure entry in the series is secretly and totally the best one and you’ll be the coolest person on the internet for having played it, but sometimes, a game is just a game and it can be really good fun while not being an Earth-shattering experience. That is, as long as the game lives up to your expectations.

Whatever it is, it’s truly a great feeling once you’re finally able to explore that game through either a re-release, learning the language, or a translation effort done by dedicated members of the gaming community.

Maybe it’s something that you’ve heard about in a YouTube video and it looked cool, or perhaps it’s a sequel to a game that didn’t get localized in your country because the previous entry didn’t sell well enough. This post has spoilers for Star Ocean: Blue Sphere – you have been warned!Įverybody who’s deep enough into video games has their Holy Grail or white whale of a game that they want to play but can’t because it’s not in their native language.
